If you have ever handled a piece of Pilliga Pottery then it is 99.9% probably the case that Julie Squire, the engraving artist, has put her mark on it. All of those blue wrens, and waratahs, and dragons…all Julie. It was Julie’s birthday last week, and through the fantastic efforts of Petra (glaze applier extraordinaire) a belt driven potter’s wheel was crowdfunded by Julie’s friends and the pottery, as her very special present. A big birthday party was held on Thursday to present the “surprise” – a surprise that someone had already let slip

Here’s some pictures from the party.

There’s nothing better on a Spring afternoon then to come down for a wander around  Pilliga Pottery and the gardens to see what is new and then sit in the sun having freshly baked scones with a cup of tea or coffee from the Blue Wren Cafe. The weekend saw several groups do just that, a great mixture of travelers and people from town took advantage of the warm weather, our beautiful gardens and scones galore!

There’s lots to see in the gallery at the moment with some impressive pieces that celebrate our native flora and fauna. If you are interested in one of these larger pieces then give the pottery a call during business hours if you can’t come down.

We handed over the business side of things to Pidgie as he has been at Barkala Farm now since March last year and knows the ropes pretty well. Pidgie was found as a baby on Dandry Rd by two cyclists. He was covered in meat ants and probably only minutes from being eaten alive. Luckily the good Samaritans knew where to take him for help and he ended up being fostered with us. He’s a wild pigeon in that he roams free around the Pottery and farm, and has his own territory, but he’s on the hunt for a lady friend (or two) as it’s that time of the year and so you might spot him “supervising” at the Blue Wren cafe.

Just a reminder that the August special only has a week or so to go. Book more than 1 night’s accommodation and get free hot breakfast from day 3 morning. Don’t for get to mention “Free hot breakfast” when you book.

Keep an eye out for Pidgie when you drop in next time!

Spring: A time of new beginnings, and what better time to start a weekly blog so you get to see what is happening here at Barkala Farm Stay – Home of Pilliga Pottery. The plan is to post weekly, with pictures, words, videos, and deals so you get a taste of what it is like to come visit us. There’s always something happening here and no matter what time of the year you come and stay you are bound to experience something special.

August Deal

We have a great deal for visitors running for the month of August. If you stay more than one night you get a free hot breakfast for every morning after that extra night. Just mention the magic words “Hot breakfast deal” in your booking and you will be waking up to delicious country fare.

What’s Happening Down on the Farm?

jonquils

The weather is starting to warm during the day and the birds think that it is time to find mates, but the nights are still chilly. This means we have both winter and spring blooms happening in the gardens. Those jonquils fill the air with scent, and a walk around the gardens is a must in the afternoon.

Grevillia

The organic greenhouse will be bursting with new growth for the Blue Wren Cafe in the next couple of weeks. It’s mostly been wintered over the last few months, doesn’t mean that it’s been entirely idle though as herbs and winter greens have been in big damnd in the kitchen.

Beans

The afternoon bird chorus is ramping up as visitors are flying in from everywhere. Imagine yourself relaxing under the trees, being serenaded by our feathered friends

See you soon!
